Farriers

We offer a few options for farriers. Both Greg McDonald and Stewart Mawyer shoe horses for Summerhill and Norwood. If you would like to use either Greg or Stewart, your horse will be placed on a rotation; we will hold your horse; and you will be charged for both the shoeing/trim and a $5 holding fee on your next monthly bill. If you would prefer to use your own farrier, you will be responsible for holding your own horse and payment. Also, we ask that you not schedule your farrier during feeding time (7-9AM and 4-6 PM).

Veterinarian

Summerhill and Norwood use Virginia Equine for all of our veterinary services. We require that you use Virginia Equine for all of your veterinary needs. The only exception to this is for ongoing conditions that are being followed by another veterinarian.  All of our horses are vaccinated on the same day in the spring and fall, and there is no charge for holding your horse on this day.

Incoming Veterinary Requirements

Summerhill and Norwood both require all incoming horses to have both a current, negative Coggins and a current intranasal strangles vaccine (this is a two vaccine series).

Deworming

All horses are dewormed every other month on a rotational schedule of fenbendazole, ivermectin, and pyrantel pamoate. One a year, we deworm with Quest or Quest Plus. On these months you will be charged an additional fee of $10/horse for the dewormer and its administration. If you would prefer to deworm your own horse, you must inform Joe so as to ensure all horses are on a routine deworming schedule.

Boarding

At Summerhill and Norwood, we pride ourselves in knowing each horse as an individual. We have very few employees, so the same knowledgeable and trustworthy staff will handle your horse on a daily basis. This also helps us to better monitor your horse’s condition and pick up on subtle changes that might be missed at busier barns. Joe Hairfield manages Norwood and oversees Summerhill, while Shannon Foor, manages Summerhill. Both Joe and Shannon feed twice daily, so you can be sure your horse will receive expert care. Please see below for our boarding options as well as our farrier and veterinary services.

Shannon Foor is a very dedicated employee whose main goal is the health and comfort of you and your horse. Shannon has owned horses all of her life and has been employed at barns such as Wintergate, Swift Creek, and Galloping Fields for the past 17 years. She prides herself on a spotless barn and attention to even the smallest of details. In her spare time, Shannon draws caricatures and animal pastels as well as cares for her family and her own two horses. After working for Joe at Norwood for a little over a year, Shannon moved to Summerhill to become the barn manager in 2009. We are very fortunate to have such a wonderful and caring person as part of our team.
